What this tour is about: This is a fun, educational experience to learn about the mangrove ecosystem of Kerala, as well as the unique below-sea-level integrated farming practiced in the region. Take a motor boat ride through Kochi's mangroves with a knowledgeable naturalist. Spot colourful birds, insects and reptiles, and learn about the local ecology, agriculture and pisciculture. Enjoy packed snacks on the boat.
About Kochi's mangroves: Kochi's busy coastline still contains small, beautiful islands of dense mangroves that support a variety of birds and animals. These mangrove forests are uniquely adapted to tidal areas with salty water. Mangroves are ecologically critical to the area - they sequester carbon, filter pollution from water, and prevent coastal erosion. They also serve as nurseries for baby fish, crustaceans and other marine life.
About Below-Sea-Level Integrated Farming: Kerala is one of the few places in the world where farmers grow food in saltwater coastal areas. Their innovative seasonal practices combine rice cultivation and aquaculture. Kerala's traditional ecological knowledge can teach valuable lessons for climate adaptation and resilience for coastal communities around the world.
